Guide to Connect Union Pipe fittings

Do you know what Union in plumbing pipe fittings is?

Well, Union pipe is like connectors that are used to connect different joints of pipes in such a way that it can be removed easily any time for maintenance. It is also used for diverting the flow of water or gas.

What is the purpose of using union in plumbing?

In the field of plumbing, the purpose of using unions is, you don’t need to remove other pipes when you have union pipe as a connector. It is also used for soldering, or rotation when using threaded pipe couplings, or threaded pipe nipples
The union pipe consists of two female threaded ends, with a central nut that holds two ends together.

How to Connect Union Pipe fitting?

This blog can be of great help to you, as we are going to share the best guidelines on how to connect union pipe fittings. Following these steps, you can do this fitting on your own without any assistance of professional plumbers.

Step 1

In the first step, you need to measure the length of the union pipe with all threaded parts together, then subtract this measurement from the total width of the threads union on each end.
Now, choose that pipe section which needs to install a union, mark two points on this pipe section, both marks should be at the same distance as the length of the union.

Step 2

Make a cut on each mark which you made on the pipe, then place a tubing cutter around the pipe, leaning the pipe against the two little rollers on one of the shaper's jaws. Fix the shaper's round cutting edge on its other jaw against the pipe, at one of the imprints. Turn the shaper once, at that point fix the cutting edge once more.
It’s time to rotate again the pipe. Keep on repeating this procedure until the pipe is cut through. Again, cut pipe through the second mark, so repeat the process again. Once you get done, remove the cutout pipe section.

Step 3

At this step, you have to remove the existing pipes from both cut sides. Place a pipe wrench around each pipe by the closest coupling, and turn the torque counter-clockwise way to detach and expel the pipe from the coupling.
Take each pipe section to a major home-improvement store, and make both the cut ends of pipes threaded one.

Step 4

Finally, we have reached to concluding steps, now what you have to do is, cover yellow sealing tape two times in a clockwise way around the threaded ends of both gas pipes. (If you’re going to wrap galvanized water pipes, then use white sealing tapes)

Screw the funnels by hand into the couplings from which they were expelled. Fix each of the funnels to the couplings utilizing the pipe torque.

Step 5

Lastly, fix the union's end nut, with the bigger nut attached, by hand onto one pipe end. Make it tighter in place with a crescent wrench. Then screw another end nut against the other pipe end, then again tighten it up using a wrench.
